When I moved to Rome in 2019, I set out to see as much of the country as possible. Italy, like many European countries, is easy to travel by train. The trains run at convenient and frequent hours, tickets aren’t too expensive and you can find routes to most places. Since I was working weekdays, I made plans for nearly every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday that I was in Italy. Below are some recommendations for day trips if you are based in Rome! Remember, you can’t go wrong. Italy is beautiful and no matter where you go you will fall in love.
A few of my personal favors include:
Bracciano, Ostia Antica, Civita di Bagnoregio + Orvieto (these two are closeby and make for a great day trip!), Assisi, Santa Marinella, Bomarzo, Siena, Pisa, and Castel Gandolfo.
You can also hop on the high-speed train to visit cities that are a bit farther away. My favorites include:
- Verona
- Bologna
- Napoli
- Firenze
- Amalfi Coast
- Venice
Trenitalia and Italo are the two main train companies here. Italo is the prime choice for high-speed travel.
